Daniel Wright

Daniel Wright is a Sculptural Copper designer based in Tauranga. With over 37 years of making behind him, his practice is grounded in a lifelong commitment to craft, material exploration, and a deep connection to the natural world.

Wright’s creative journey began in West Auckland, where early exposure to bush and wild west coast beaches such as Piha and Karekare shaped his visual language. He first discovered making through woodwork classes at Avondale College, where a formative bone carving project introduced him to hands-on, process-driven work. From the outset, he was drawn to small-scale objects, refined surfaces, flowing curves, and the meditative focus of careful making.

For many years, Wright worked primarily with bone, native timber, and driftwood, later expanding into furniture making, carving, and sculptural objects. Surfing became a parallel influence, informing both the forms he explored and a nomadic lifestyle that saw him live and work across Aotearoa and Australia. Throughout this time, he balanced making art with manual trades, developing resilience, adaptability, and a practical understanding of how to sustain a creative life.

Wright’s transition to copper marked a pivotal moment in his practice. Despite initially avoiding metal, he found copper uniquely aligned with his sensibilities—soft, responsive, and organic despite its strength. He was drawn to its patina and unpredictability, valuing the way each piece records time through surface, oxidation, and handling. This quality echoes his earlier relationship with timber, where no two grains—or outcomes—are ever the same.

Today, Wright works primarily with hand tools, combining traditional techniques with carefully considered production systems that allow designs to be refined and reproduced sustainably. His practice has evolved from one-off objects to repeatable forms, a shift he views not as a loss of creativity but as a way to support it long-term.

Wright’s work seeks to echo, rather than imitate, nature—creating objects that feel calm, balanced, and timeless. Rather than telling explicit narratives, his pieces invite quiet engagement, offering a sense of flow and stillness intended to be lived with over time.
