Yvonne Gray

Yvonne Gray is a contemporary painter and mixed media artist whose practice explores the emotional resonance of landscape and place. Over a career spanning more than twenty years, she has developed a layered and intuitive approach that reflects a deep sensitivity to light, atmosphere, and memory.

 Her work is characterized by a distinctive use of colour—both transparent and opaque—and the dynamic application of materials. Utilizing a wide range of tools and techniques, she builds richly textured surfaces that invite close engagement. Subtle inclusions of text, figuration, or unexpected marks create entry points for the viewer, fostering a sense of connection and discovery.

Yvonne’s compositions range from vividly expressive to quietly meditative, often evoking transient moments in nature—a gust of wind, shifting light on water, or the peace of a walk in nature. Each piece is a sensory exploration, offering a contemplative space that balances spontaneity with thoughtful structure.

 Yvonne has held three solo exhibitions and was awarded the 2021 Merit Prize for Painting at the Estuary Arts Centre and she was a finalist in the 2023 and 2025 Hibiscus & Bays Art Awards. Based in Ōrewa, Auckland, Yvonne’s practice is an ongoing exploration of presence, mood and the unseen layers of the world around us.
